The UK's Lloyd's List magazine has just announced the ranking of the 100 container ports with the largest cargo traffic in the world by 2025.

Notably, Vietnam has three seaports on this list, including Ho Chi Minh City , Hai Phong and Cai Mep seaports.

Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City seaport ranked 22nd with an output of more than 9.1 million TEUs in 2024, an increase of 23.8% compared to 2023. With this achievement, Ho Chi Minh City seaport increased 3 places compared to the 2024 ranking.

Hai Phong seaport holds the 29th position (up 4 places compared to 2024) with cargo throughput in 2024 reaching about 7.1 million TEUs, up 12.8% compared to 2023.

Meanwhile, with more than 7 million TEUs of cargo throughput in 2024 (an increase of 29.2% compared to 2023), Cai Mep seaport rose to 30th place, up 4 rankings compared to 2024.

According to Lloyd's List, Vietnam's shipping industry has witnessed a surge in cargo traffic through ports over the past year, mainly due to the impact of US-China trade tensions, forcing many investors and shipping lines to seek to diversify their supply chains in Southeast Asia.

The report shows that the total volume of goods passing through 100 container ports reached 743.6 million TEUs, up 8.1% compared to the previous year. Vietnam, along with India and Türkiye, are emerging markets that have taken advantage of supply chain restructuring and regional trade agreements.

The three seaports of Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong and Cai Mep are also the three largest seaports in Vietnam, classified as special ports. Of which, Hai Phong and Cai Mep seaports are planned as gateway ports combined with international transit, receiving large-tonnage container ships entering and leaving the port to load and unload goods, helping to reduce logistics costs.

Recently, these three seaports were also included in the top 50 seaports handling the largest container volume in the world in 2024, according to the announcement of DynaLiners Millionaires. The achievements of these three major seaports have placed Vietnam in 6th place in the list of countries with seaports handling large container volumes.

Asia continues to dominate the list of the world’s 100 largest container ports by cargo throughput, with Chinese ports alone accounting for more than 40% of global container traffic.

Topping the list is the Port of Shanghai, with a cargo throughput of more than 51.5 million TEUs in 2024. Shanghai Port has maintained its position as the world's busiest container hub, despite the complex geopolitical landscape and efforts by businesses to diversify their supply chains.

Singapore Port ranked second with over 41.1 million TEUs, continuing to maintain its position as the world's leading transshipment hub.
